All right… made it to Friday! I have to say that I am actually feeling pretty good today. Pretty good for a guy like me anyway. Monday’s HIIT class was intense and it took a couple of days (and finally submitting to foam rolling) to recover from, but as my inner thighs slowly stopped hurting I find myself thinking about next week’s class. Maybe even looking forward to it. Looking Forward may be going a bit far, but I like the way I feel about myself having discovered that I can actually make it through the session. I could not have done it even just a couple of months ago, and I am grateful for all the work and attention that Lee and Elisabeth from RedBird Pilates have given me to get me to this point.
And speaking of foam rolling… Have you guys tried this? It is hands down the most painful thing I have ever done to myself on purpose. Apparently the pain is a sign that I need to do it in the first place. The Slimdown Showdown folks gave each of us a foam roller during Fit Camp and tried to show us how to use it, but 90% of the people in the challenge didn’t have the strength to actually be able do it yet. I have been told repeatedly by people I trust that I need to start doing it daily if I want to gain more flexibility, and I have balked at every turn. That ended on Tuesday.
Elisabeth at Redbird has really been encouraging me to start rolling, and she has even shown me some basic techniques and sent me links to videos with more info. After The HIIT class my legs just got tighter and tighter. By Tuesday afternoon if I sat for more than 10 minutes my inner thighs hurt so bad I could barely walk. I went to the gym to walk a little and stretch, hoping to loosen things up. The Gold’s I belong to has a section set aside for stretching and a huge bin full of rollers, so I decided to give it a go. I probably only spent about 15 minutes doing it, focusing on my hamstrings, quads, gluts and shoulders. It hurt like a bitch while I was doing it, but it really helped the rest of the day.
Wednesday started out much the same as Tuesday – stiff & sore, so I went to the gym and did the same routine and I guess everyone hasn’t been lying to me because =things have been fine ever since. It’s still hard to hold myself in some of the positions, but there is usually a way to modify things so I can do what needs to get done. I missed rolling yesterday, but I am definitely going to do it today. I’m setting aside all my resistance and choosing to believe that it will do what everyone says it does, and that if I stick to it I will finally start to see some real flexibility in my muscles. I am a pretty strong som’bitch, but it would sure be nice to be a little bendy-er…
