I really need to learn how to stretch. I mean I REALLY need to learn how. All the Pilates I am doing is really exposing just how limited my range of motion is in some areas, and I know that it’s not going to change by itself. So I guess I have something new to learn.
What little stretching I have ever done has mostly been an afterthought – something tacked on to the end of a workout. By that point I am ready to be done, so I have never actually spent any time actually learning what is supposed to be happening. We stretch at the end of every Pilate’s session and I follow instructions, but I really need to know what is supposed to be happening and how to do it.
My wife and I were on our Sunday walk around Town Lake yesterday and we started talking about this topic. She wondered aloud if maybe we shouldn’t be stretching every day as a part of our fitness routine. My first thought was “That seems a little excessive”, but the more I thought about it the more sense it made. I remember listening to a friend who is a retired NBA player say that the thing he misses most is having a trainer make him stretch every day. SO I guess that’s really a thing…
What do you guys do stretching-wise? My hamstrings are so tight I can’t sit at a 90 degree angle and if I don’t loosen my shoulders up soon I’m gonna need traction.
